Cortisol is an important hormone involved in the body's response to physical and psychological stress. Unlike many laboratory measurements, cortisol changes considerably throughout the day.
Levels normally rise around awakening and then decline progressively towards the evening. Measuring several saliva samples at defined times therefore provides more information about an individual's cortisol pattern than a single measurement taken at one point in time.

Why measure cortisol several times?
A single cortisol measurement provides information about one moment in time. By collecting several samples across the day, it is possible to examine the pattern of cortisol secretion from awakening through to the evening.
Persometrics combines these physiological measurements with validated questionnaire data to provide a broader educational picture of stress and wellbeing.
Patterns such as the Cortisol Awakening Response and the decline in cortisol across the day are widely studied in stress research. However, cortisol measurements alone cannot diagnose or predict burnout.
